Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Claude Code subscription?
Yes. OpenHelm sits on top of Claude Code and uses your existing subscription to execute jobs. We don't charge for Claude API usage. That's between you and Anthropic.
How does "Fair Source" licensing work?
OpenHelm uses the Business Source License (BSL 1.1). Individuals, students, non-profits, and businesses with under $1M annual revenue can use it completely free. Larger businesses must purchase a commercial license.
Why not stay MIT?
MIT let anyone (including large enterprises) use the project for free with no contribution back. BSL ensures the project stays funded and actively maintained, while still being free for the vast majority of users. Think of it as "sustainability, not greed."
What's the advantage of Cloud over Business (Local)?
Cloud means no infrastructure to maintain. No dedicated Mac mini in the office closet. More importantly, autonomous AI runs in our hardened, ephemeral containers completely off your corporate network. You also get team-wide shared history and logs that don't live on a single developer's laptop.
Is my code safe?
The Community and Business tiers run entirely on your machine. Your code never leaves your environment. For Cloud, jobs execute in isolated, ephemeral containers and are never stored persistently. Our source code is fully available for audit.
